Chapter 2 Homework Assignments

Assignment 7
Sect 2.1/every fourth

Plus these six:
1. Write the equation for a circle of radius 9 whose center is at (-4,3)
2. Find two points on this circle by inputing values for either x or y and solving for the other unknown
3. Write the equation of a circle whose radius is the square root of 8 and center is at (2,-2)
4. Find the distance between (3,-2) and (7,-7). Craw a graph and use pythagorean theorem
5. Write the equation if (3,-2) were the center of the circle and (7,-7) were a point on the circles circumference.
6. Find the equation of a circle that has its center at (-1,4) and passes through the point (4-9)

Also the following:

21. Write the formula of a circle whose center is at (2, 3) and whose radius is 2.5 .

22. Find the y-intercepts of the equation the circle you gave above.

23. Suppose an earthquake was felt in Florida and the S-waves, traveling at 4km/sec, arrived 123 secs after the P-waves, traveling at 7.5km/sec. How far away would the readings indicate the epicenter or cause of the tremors was?

24. Write the formula for the circle which has a center at (-3, 5) and contains the point (2, -7).

25. Find two more points that would reside on this circle by setting to x = 4 .

Don't forget to bring individually your completed work and one registration form per group to the test for credit.

Assignment 1

Section 1.2 Read the entire section as you are responsible for all its information

Assignment 2
Section 1.5 / pgs. 24-25 / 2-18 even (these are kinda lame but on the test), 19-28, 30-45(every third)

1. (x+3)/6 = 15/(x-3)
2. (2/3)(x+5) = 12/(x-4)
3. (x/5) + (x/4) = 3/20
4. (x-6)/2 - (3x-6)/3 = 0
5. (x+4)/7 = 6/(x+3)
6. (x-2)/3 = 5/(2x+3)

Assignment 3
Section 1.6 / pgs. 30-31 / 2-40 evens and also the following to be solved:

1. After a 4% increase the price of Tom's stocks were valued @ $57.20. What was the original price. Use the formula on page 29.

2. Explain why a person could calculate the original value of teh previous simply by dividing by 1.04.

1. The length of a certain rectangle is 3 more than twice its width. Its perimeter id 55.5 meters. Find its dimensions.

2. The length of the same rectangle as above is 3 more than twice its width. Suppose you didn't know the information about its perimeter and were instead told that the area is 160.875 square meters, write the new set of constraints and use substitution to solve this one as well.

3. Find three consecutive even integers that meet this condition: Triple the highest value taken fron double the second highest is the opposite of three times the lowest.

4. Find three consecutive integers that meet this condition. The sum of three times the second number, double the first number and five times the last number is eight.

11. The number of miles left for me to drive if my wife drives w miles of a 1400 mile trip.

Translate the following sentences into equation:
Begin by defining a variable for each value that is unknown.

1. My neice's age now is equal to one third of my age two years ago.
2. length of a rectangle is five less than half the width
3. In Four years from now my nephew will be exactly half my age.
4. Right now I am 1 year more than 3 times my nephew's age.
5. The Amount of my car loan will be Price of the Car minus the 20% down payment.
6. the sale price on that shirt is 15% off of the regular retail price.
7. The downpayment is 20% of the original cost
8. my new rate of pay represents a 4% increase over my original rate.

Review the last problem given on assignment #4 and try these four:
1. What was the intial value of my house if it loss 17% of its original value due to the bad economy it is now worth $183,333?
2. (x+4)/6 = 9/2x-6
3. (x-3)/6 - 2/(4x-6)=15/38
4. Two trains are traveling in opposite directions along parallel tracks moving cargo from a seaport to a distribution warehouse in the mountains.. The loaded one is traveling at 40mph slightly uphill and the empty at 65mph on the return leg. It is true though that they both travel the same distance. If they leave at the same time from opposite ends of the track but it takes the loaded one 50minutes longer to make the trip, how far apart are the seaport and the warehouse? (keep in mind that since D= rt, t=D/r)
